Infused Oils
Infused Apothecary Oils
A premium method for extracting the fat-soluble compounds of Frankincense and Myrrh. These oils are perfect for high-end skincare, therapeutic massage, or traditional apothecary uses.
The Standard Ratios
-
The Master Ratio:
- 1 Part Resin (Frankincense, Myrrh, or a 50/50 blend)
- 10 Parts Carrier Oil
- Example: 1 oz (30g) of resin to 10 oz (300ml) of oil.
- Recommended Carrier Oils: Use stable, neutral oils like Grapeseed, Fractionated Coconut, Jojoba, or Sweet Almond oil. For culinary use, use high-quality Olive or Sunflower oil.
Step-by-Step Instructions (Double-Boiler Method)
- Grind the Resin: Pulse your resin in a spice grinder or use a mortar and pestle until it reaches a coarse powder consistency. This allows the oil to penetrate the resin more effectively.
- Set up the Double-Boiler: Fill a pot with 1–2 inches of water and bring to a simmer. Place a heat-safe glass or stainless steel bowl on top (ensure the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water).
- Combine: Pour your carrier oil into the bowl and add the resin powder.
-
Heat Gently: Infuse the mixture over low heat for 2 to 4 hours.
- Temperature Control: Ideally, keep the oil between 120°F – 140°F (50°C – 60°C). Do not allow the oil to boil, as high heat will destroy the delicate Boswellic acids and essential oils.
- Cool & Strain: Turn off the heat and let the oil cool to room temperature. Strain the infusion through a fine cheesecloth or muslin bag, squeezing firmly to extract every drop of potent oil.
- Bottle: Pour the finished infusion into a clean amber glass bottle.
Pro Tips
- The "Lid" Secret: Always keep a lid on your infusion bowl while heating. This prevents the precious volatile essential oils from evaporating into the air, keeping them trapped in your carrier oil instead.
- Sediment: You may notice a small amount of fine sediment at the bottom of your bottle after a few days. This is normal and contains beneficial compounds; you can either shake it up before use or leave it at the bottom.
- Resin Sticky-Factor: To clean your equipment afterward, use high-proof rubbing alcohol or a bit of vodka. Soap and water alone will not easily remove the sticky resin residue.
Storage & Safety
- Shelf Life: If stored in a cool, dark place, infused oils typically last 6–12 months, depending on the shelf life of the carrier oil you chose.
- Avoid Moisture: Ensure your jars and tools are completely dry. Even a single drop of water in your oil can cause mold to grow over time.
- Topical Use: Always perform a patch test on a small area of skin before using the oil extensively to ensure no sensitivity occurs.
